IT raid: Two senior officers suspended

Following the biggest seizure of new currency of worth Rs 5 crore by Income Tax Department during the search at two senior engineers’ residence on Thursday, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwar said: “The state government has issued an order to suspend both the officers.”

Speaking at Legislative Council on Friday, Parameshwar said that the state government has suspended S C Jayachandra, Chief Planning Officer of State Highway Development Project, PWD, and T N Chikkarayappa, Managing Director of Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd.

Of the seizure, about Rs 4.7 crore was in the denomination of Rs 2000. According to sources, Chikkarayappa is allegedly a close aide to CM Siddaramaiah and S C Jayachandra was a close aide to PWD Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa.

According to the release by the Ministry of Finance and Income Tax Department, the residence of two state government engineers and two contractors were raided by nearly 50 officials at 10 places in Bengaluru, Chennai and Erode. CBI officials are likely to interrogate the suspended officials shortly.
