Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who has been undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai since Sept 22, suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday. She was moved back to the intensive care unit from her room, where she was shifted to on Nov 19.
The recent press release by the Apollo hospital officials says that the condition of Jayalalithaa is very critical and is kept on ECMO treatment. ECMO treatment enables blood circulation to the heart. It provides long-term breathing and heart support and is used only when all of the standard treatments for those problems have already been tried.
Jayalalitha was first admitted to Apollo hospital on September 22 for dehydration and fever. But since then amma’ as she is fondly called upon by her supporters hasn’t shown improvement. After undergoing rigorous intensive treatment from specialists, was moved to a private ward only on November 19. Just when Amma supporters thought she will walk out fine, shocking news surfaced from the hospital on Sunday evening. The Apollo hospitals released a statement saying Jayalalitha suffered a minor cardiac arrest and her condition was ‘stable’.
Following the report, hundreds of supporters gathered in front of the hospital gates, praying for the speedy recovery of their Chief Minister. Since no news has been released by the hospital officials yet, it has led to lot of confusion.
The officials are supposed to conduct a press meet at 5pm today to brief the country regarding Jayalalithaa’s current health conditions.
Police security has been beefed up in Chennai with the central government also sending in para military forces to keep the law and order under check across Tamil Nadu.

Wishes are pouring in for Jayalalitha’s recovery from all across the country. President Pranab Mukharjee, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and others tweeted for her recovery. Rajnath is said to be in constant touch with the Apollo Hospital doctors regarding Jayalalithaa’s health conditions.
Announcing the sudden deterioration in health, a statement by Chief Operating Officer and head of transformation of Apollo Hospitals, Dr Subbaiah Viswanathan last night said, “she is being treated and monitored by a team of experts, including cardiologists, pulmonologist and critical care specialists.”
AIADMK Ministers, who stayed put at the hospital since yesterday, left this morning. They did not talk to the waiting media persons.
Party workers, who had gathered in large numbers outside the hospital after news of her cardiac arrest broke, braved midnight rains and continued to wait outside, praying for the recovery.
