To bring fresh hope among the hearing impaired, JSS Hospital in association with JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing has taken initiative to start cochlear implant surgeries and has become the first hospital in Mysuru to conduct the surgeries under the Scheme of Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids/Appliances (ADIP) scheme.
Addressing press persons here on Tuesday, Dr Guru of JSS Hospital said that cochlear implant is a medical device which replaces the person’s cochlea (auditory portion of the inner ear) with an artificial one, through an operation. “The cost of the artificial cochlea is around Rs 6 lakh and in addition to this Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh is the cost for pre-operative investigations and post-operative rehabilitation. Considering the high cost of implant, the central government has started cochlear implant programme under its ADIP Scheme, where the implant will be provided for the underprivileged children for free, he added.
Further explaining on expenditures, he said, the government will bear the cost of implant, operative charges, including charges for stay in the hospital and post-operative speech, language and hearing therapy. However, the patient has to pay the charges for pre-operative audio logical and radiological investigation, Dr Guru said.
He said the hearing impaired have to undergo therapy after this medical course for hearing experience through various experiments on their routine activities.
