Kanakadasa Jayanti celebrated in Mysuru

Mysuru, December 3:- The District administration and Kannada and Culture Department celebrated Kanakadaa Jayanti at Maneyangala at Kalamandira on Vinoba Road here on Thursday (December 3).

Recalling Kanakadasa’s contributions to the society, leaders present on the occasion praised his role for trying to eradicate the caste system in the 15th and 16th centuries. Floral tributes were paid to the statue of Kanakadasa at a simple function.

Chamaraja Constituency MLA L Nagendra, Varuna Constituency MLA Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri, Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer (CEO) D Bharathi, Mysuru Superintendent of Police (SP) C B Rhyshyanth and others were present on the occasion.

Kanakadasa was a Haridasa, a renowned composer of Carnatic music, poet, philosopher and musician. He was known for his keertanas and ugabhoga, compositions in the Kannada language for Carnatic music. Like other Haridasasas, he used simple Kannada language and native metrical forms for his compositions. (MR/KS)
