Kodavas need to highlight their culture to world outside: MLC Dharmasena

Melas such as Kodava Sahitya Samskruthika Mela help to highlight the uniqueness of their culture, noted the MLC

Scouts and Guides Grounds: “Don’t restrict melas to yourself; invite people from other communities so that they get to know about the Kodavas,” said MLC R Dharmasena.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the two-day state-level Kodava Sahitya Samskruthika Mela organised by the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, Madikeri, in association with the Kodava Samaja at Scouts and Guides Grounds here on Sunday appreciated the academy for conducting the mela outside Kodagu.

“By conducting such melas outside, people will become aware of the prevailing Kodava culture and also it helps in promoting the culture of the Kodavas to other states. The life style of people of Kodagu is akin to that of Britishers. People from region who have served and been serving in the police and armed forces have inculcated discipline stressed on competence,” said Dharmasena.

Former vice chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, P G Chengappa who also spoke on the occasion called upon the 18 native communities of Kodagu to come together to conduct various programmes under the Karnataka Kodava Sahithya Academy so that the purpose of setting academy by government will be realised.

When P G Chengappa sought more grants for the academy, MLC Dharmasena said: “The academy requested to enhance the annual grants from Rs 65 lakh to Rs 1 crore, but I request the government to enhance the grant to Rs 2 crore.”

He also called upon the youngsters not get much addicted to modern technology and requested them to look after their parents when they grow up.

During the two-day event various cultural and awareness programmes including poets meet were conducted. Due to the death of two people from the community and also due to the ongoing exams, the audience was not as much expected.

Biddatanda S Thammaiah, Chairman, Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy said that the academy was planning to host World Kodava Literature and Cultural Fest in Bengaluru in near future.
