Legal fraternity remembers Dr Ambedkar on Constitution Day

Recollecting the contributions of Dr B R Ambedkar in drafting the finest constitution in the world – the Constitution of India, legal expert Dr C K N Raja said that the Indian Constitution was not a mere political document but was the highest law of the land.

Speaking at a programme organised by Sharada Vilas Law College to mark the Constitution Day on Saturday, Raja said the non-discriminatory Constitution of India was the outcome of immense efforts from the father of the Indian Constitution and his committee members in drafting it.

“The constitution of India is very unique all over the world and has taken around 2 years, 11 months and 17 days to pass by the Constituent Assembly. I have read the Constitutions of various countries but found Indian Constitution to be the best,” Dr Raja said.

Describing Dr Ambedkar’s persona as exceptional, Dr Raja said, “To be elected as the chairman of the Constitution drafting committee among the plethora of experts including Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Rajendra Prasad etc, shows Dr Ambedkar’s ability and persona.”

If the Constitution drafting process was compared to a cricket match series, Dr Raja said, Dr Ambedkar would be given both Man of the Match and Man of the Series Award. “Such was his contribution,” Dr Raja added.

He further said that post drafting of the Constitution Dr Ambedkar was open to criticism as he believed “criticism would further strengthen the draft and would make it more apt. That is the reason he requested more time to be given to the critics than to those who were in favour of the draft.”

The Constitution Day is celebrated on 26th of November every year to spread the importance of the constitution and thoughts and ideas of Dr B R Ambedkar.

Mysore Urban Development Authority chairman R Dhruvakumar, writer Nagasidhart Holeyar, Mysuru City Corporation corporator M V Ram Prasad, Sharada Vilas Institution president S Parthasarthi, secretary H K Srinath and Sharada Vilas Law College principal Vinita P K were present.
