Lending meaning to Swachhata Abhiyan in Namma Mysuru

Mysuru, June25:- Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is the most-talked about phenomena in the heritage city of Mysuru. The ‘City of Palaces’ won top honours in Swachhata Samrakshan under certain category of population in recent years. Sadly, the concept of swachhata has remained just for winning the honours and not in the real sense of term.

It is crystal clear that the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is not serious about strict implementation of the exercise that it preaches. Since at the segregation level itself, though the poor residents take pains to segregate the waste as dry and waste and bring in separate bins to the door steps, the pourakarmikas just drop the waste in a single drum and mix them. It is further taken to the bigger bins which have also no provision for segregated waste. The entire garbage is dropped into the vans and taken to the dumping yard.

Here again, the waste is segregated which is waste of time and energy. After observing this ‘tamasha,’ we are surprised to find that such awareness programme is conducted for segregation at the doorsteps, the MCC’s approach to swachhata is lackadaisical and the corporations has not taken any steps to dump the waste as segregated and move fast. Even the trucks and manpower are inadequate to carry out the swachhata exercise and hence, it should increase its budget to carry out the work efficiently.

The officials of MCC must look into the matter and streamline the procedures to have a real Swachh Abhiyaan. The small trucks used for this purpose are quite old and emit lot of smoke, thus polluting the air. MCC needs to recruit more number of pourakarmikas as the city is growing and it is burdensome on the few pourakarmikas.

We as citizens need to follow ‘Swachhata’ in the real sense to lead a healthy life. -(K V Ramanath, the author is a social activist)
