LS polls: Sumalatha files nomination from Mandya

Mysuru/Mandya: The game has just begun. Backed by thousands of supporters, wife of late actor-politician Ambareesh, Sumalatha filed her nomination papers as an independent candidate from Mandya Lok Sabha constituency here on Wednesday.

Coming in a colourful procession in a lorry, Sumalatha held a road show till DC’s office where she filed her nomination. Many Sandalwood stars including Darshan, Yash, Doddanna and producer Rockline Venkatesh accompanied Sumalatha. Late Ambareesh’s fans held a bike rally in Mandya ahead of Sumalatha’s nomination.

Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son, Nikhil’s candidature from Mandya has angered many Congress workers and former JD(S)  leaders. Under the seat-sharing understanding between the coalition partners, Mandya has gone to the JD(S). Present JD(S) MP from Mandya, L Shivarame Gowda, was expecting to contest again but much to his chagrin, his name was overlooked.

After Congress refused to support Sumalatha contesting from Mandya on the party ticket, Sumalatha met many leaders, including veteran politician S M Krishna, before deciding to jump into the fray.  BJP has extended full support to Sumalatha.

Prior to filing her nomination, Sumalatha visited Chamundi Hills and offered special prayers to the Goddess in the morning.

“Ambareesh used to visit Chamundi Hills ahead of filing nomination before any election. I used to accompany him then. I have come here ahead of filing nominations today. He will be with me always. I have no tension. I am going to file the nomination with my supporters. As I am stepping into politics with a good intention, I have prayed to Goddess Chamundeshwari to bless me,” she said.

She was accompanied by son Abhishek and Rockline Venkatesh. (MR/KS).
