Maharani Arts College students protest against poor canteen

Mysuru, September 14:- Students of Maharani Arts College for Women staged a sudden protest condemning the sorry state of the college canteen on Friday.

“The college has more than 3,000 students. More than half of them are from rural areas. They depend on the college canteen for their food. But the tender holders of the canteen have fixed the prices of food according to their wish. They have miserably failed to keep the canteen clean,” alleged the protesting students.

MLA of Chamaraja Constituency and chairman of the College Development Committee L Nagendra visited the spot and took a swipe at the tender holders. Officials of Health and Family Welfare Department, MCC Health Department officials inspected the spot along with the MLA. As the canteen was found to be filthy, it was locked down.

Commissioner of Mysuru City Corporation also instructed the authorities to take action against the tender holder. Nagendra discussed with the Commissioner of the Education Department and instructed him to construct a compound wall around the college for the safety of the girls and cancel the existing tender of the canteen. The students withdrew their protest after the MLA promised action.

MCC health officer Jayanth, District Health and Family Welfare officer Venkatesh, MCC Commissioner Gurudutta Hegde, principal Vijay Kumar and staffs and others were present.

Lakshmipuram Police Inspector provided protection at the spot. (MR/KS)
