‘Mass beef eating’ programme by Dalits

Condemning the continued attack on Dalits in the name of beef eating across the country, Dalit organisationsin city have organised a ‘mass beef eating’ programme on July 31 in front of Dr B Ambedkar statue near Town hall.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Dalit Welfare Trust President Shantharaju said ‘Though atrocities against Dalits is a perennial affair, the incidents in Gujarat and other places adds new dimension to the phenomenon. Dalits from the tanner community were accused of cow slaughter and beaten up for skinning the cows. Condemning this, Dalit organisations in association with progressive thinkers have decided to hold a ‘mass beef eating’ programme on July 31.

Further Shantharaju claimed that incidents of atrocities on Dalits have risen during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule. “After the formation of the BJP government under the leadership of Modi, Dalits and people belonging to other backward classes are being harassed. On one hand Modi and his government is projecting Dr Ambedkar as a messiah for its political interest and making several announcements in his name, on the other Dalits are being exploited in the country,” he alleged. No action has been taken by the central government against those who have made objectionable statements against Dr Ambedkar.

Elaborating, he said the recent remarks on BSP supremo Mayawati, a Dalit leader, are a gross violation. Modi government has outnumbered the attack on Dalits compared to all other governments. “In the name of beef eating Dalits are being suppressed, beef is our traditional food and we continue to eat them. No one has the right to question our food culture,” he stressed.

Dalit Welfare Trust Vice President Rajarathnam, legal adviser Radha, Dalit Students’  Federation president Mahesh Sosale, former corporator Siddappa and Rajappa were present.
