Mass feeding to mark Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary held in Hunsur

JD(S) leader Aswal Kempe Gowda held a mass feeding at is home in Hunsur on Tuesday in the wake of 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar Jayanti. Dalit leaders in the taluk, ASP, progressive leaders, assistant commissioner and others took part in the event. The lunch was followed by a detailed discussion about the thoughts and works of Ambedkar.

Prior to the mass feeding, Assistant Commissioner Shilpa Nag addressing the gathering said: “Ambedkar is one of the foremost leaders India has ever seen. Just as Sardar Vallabh Bai Patel strove for political unitedness, Ambedkar fought for social justice and unity. He raised his voice against the oppressed and the downtrodden. He transcended all barriers and transformed himself into a world leader. The United Nations deciding to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar is a testimony of his personality and leadership.”

It is sad that today leaders have been reduced to casteist figures and their anniversaries have been reduced to mere tokenism. In times such as this, holding such mass feedings where in people of all castes dine together is a positive symbol, Shilpa Nag added.

Hunsur ASP Harish Pandey speaking on the occasion noted that caste-based system will be uprooted only when the dalits and the oppressed make significant contributions in all fields and thus become a part of the mainstream.

Dalit Sangarsha Samiti District Convenor Ningaraj Malladi, dalit leaders Hariharanandaswamy and others  said that mass feeding such as this would play a key role in uprooting the caste system that is so deeply rooted in our society.

Last year on Republic Day, a similar mass feeding was organised at the house of a dalit at Biligere village in Gowdagere hobli.
