Mayor visits Nalwadi’s statue; directs action

Mayor B L Bhyrappa, Deputy Mayor Vanitha Prasanna and other officials visited the statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar on Monday and he directed MCC officials to take necessary steps to prevent the damage.

Mayor B L Bhyrappa, Deputy Mayor Vanitha Prasanna and other officials visited the statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar on Monday following reports of cracks appearing in the statue. He directed MCC officials to take necessary steps to prevent the damage. The iconic statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar who ruled My-uru from 1902 to 1940 was carved by R P Kamat and white marble stone (amruthashile) has been used for the work of art.

The statue was unveiled by Sir M Visvesvaraya on October 16 1952. Circular cracks have been observed on the face and head of the statue and also on the sword. Seeing the damage, the mayor asked his officials to consult conservation experts and archaeology officers and assess the damage and undertake immediate repairs. The statue carries immense heritage value and the historic Dasara procession passes through this statue every year.
