MCC, CCL launch library at Kuvempu Jnana Thaana Park

People who have been frequently visiting Kuvempu Jnana Thaana Park, and other parks in the vicinity for their daily walk in the morning and evening, may now spend their precious time in reading newspapers and books, as the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) in association with City Central Library (CCL) launched a library behind the statue of Kuvempu, located on Vishvamanava Double Road in city.

The park opened in 2012 after unveiling the statue of Kuvempu and was frequented by hundreds of senior citizens both, in the morning and evening time. Former MLC C H Vijayashankar took the initiative to contribute furnitures for seating arrangements and tables and approached the CCL Deputy Director for utilising the vacant place to open a library, now the vacant place has been converted into a library and is attracting hundreds of people to regenerate reading culture.

At present there are about 5,000 collections of book stored in the newly launched library, where people
can access books by enrolling as lifetime members by paying Rs 50 for a book and Rs 75 for two books and Rs 100 for three books, respectively. The fee for membership application is just Re 1.

“While youths are dependent on multimedia technologies which lead them to focus on entertainment than gain knowledge, it is a good initiative to promote reading culture among youth and the general public. However, this library helps people like me who visit the park during morning and evening for a walk. The collection of books really inspired me, thus I enrolled as a member on the inaugural day. Moreover, reading books and newspapers is more useful than watching TV news channels.”

Including 29 newspapers both, English and Kannada, there are many literature works of eminent scholars, study materials for competitive examinations, magazines, books of Jnanapeeta recipients, and multiple subject collections of academics books is available at this library. Indeed, the location attracts people to adopt reading culture. In addition, all literary works of renowned Kannada writer Kuvempu is also available.

Mayor B L Bhyrappa inaugurated the library on Monday that has been named as Kuvempu Knowledge Centre Library. Deputy Mayor Vanitha Prasanna, Corporator K V Mallesh, CCL Deputy Director B Manjunath and others were present.Corporator K V Mallesh has worked towards establishment of this library for the benefit of citizens.
