Mysuru City Corporation organised a programme to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar on Monday.
PWD and District In-Charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa inaugurated the programme, by paying floral tribute to the Ambedkar statue in front of the Town Hall.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Ambedkar always stressed that development should start from the last man of the society and we need to focus on this to achieve overall development of the nation. Dr Ambedkar worked for the upliftment of the oppressed through constitution and has fought for their rights. It is a good move by the MCC to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti,” he said.
“Pourakarmikas work to keep the society clean. Recognising their work, UNO has called upon all the countries to dedicate a day for them as a token of appreciation. Many nations celebrate their day but a few do not. Pourakarmikas day must be celebrated everywhere,” he opined.
“The Congress government has organised many programmes for them. In future too, we have a number of plans and programmes to improve the living conditions of the pourakarmikas,” he added.
With back-to-back clean city tag in its kitty, MCC held a grand birth anniversary celebration of Dr Ambedkar as a mark of respect to the pourakarmikas who are the main hands behind this cleanest city crown.
Mayor B L Bhyrappa, Deputy Mayor Vanitha Prasanna, MLA Vasu, former chairman of Safai Karmachari Commission Narayan, MCC Commissioner Jagadhish, corporators and others were present.
When asked about Sunil Bose contesting in the coming elections after the resignation of Srinivas Prasad from the Nanjangud constituency, the minister said: “Our constitution provides opportunity for every citizen to contest the elections. Sunil has worked for the welfare of the public but it is up to him to decide to contest and the people of the constiteuency to choose their leader. Anyway, we are not taking any decision but the Congress high command will decide on the next move.”
