Mysuru, September 4:- Following the announcement of reservation of offices for Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), hectic political lobbying among women corporators has gained steam for Mayoral ‘Gaddi’ in the city.
The state government on Monday evening announced the reservation of offices of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for MCC. The Mayor’s post has been reserved for General Woman (GW) while the Deputy Mayor’s post has been reserved for Backward Classes ‘A’ (BCA). Soon after the announcement of the reservation, political lobbying has gained momentum in the heritage city.
Speculations are rife in the city’s political circles that the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) are seriously negotiating for an alliance to form the council in MCC. In support of Congress-JD(S) coalition, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dinesh Gundu Rao too on Monday confirmed that the municipal corporation’s where there is no clear majority like Mysuru and Tumakuru, the Congress will be forming an alliance with JD(S).
Even as the leaders of JD(S) and Congress are holding series of talks to form the MCC
Council, there is heated lobbying for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s Gaddi. The women candidates of Congress and JD(S) are making all out efforts to meet their respective party leaders and convince them to nominate their candidature for the coveted posts.
Nearly a dozen names are making rounds for the post of Mysuru Mayor. With the Mayor’s post reserved for General Woman, candidates of JD(S) including Prema Shankaregowda, Bhagya C Madesh, Ashwini Ananth, Savitha Suresh, Reshma Banu and Tasneem are heading the list.
While in the Congress camp, the names of H M Shanthakumari, Puttaningamma, Bhuvaneshwari, Shobha and Azeera Salma are doing the rounds.
JD(S) which has managed to secure 18 seats is eyeing the mayor’s position. If the mayor’s post is given to JD(S), the chances for Prema Shankaregowda are high. Prema who won on a JD(S) ticket from MCC (Manchgowdana Koppalu ) Ward 2 is a prominent politician of JD(S) in the city. She has served JD(S) as a party worker for many years but this is for the first time she has been elected as a member of MCC Council.
Ashwini Ananth from MCC (Raghavendra Nagar ) Ward 37 and Tasnim from MCC (Meena Bazaar ) Ward 26 have won two MCC elections and are said to be mounting pressure on the party leaders to consider them for the mayor’s post.
While Congress which has won 19 seats is said to be claiming the mayor’s post for their candidate and if they are given an option, the party may consider former deputy mayor H M Shanthakumari who won from MCC (Ghousia Nagar ) Ward 32 on a Congress ticket.
The senior Congress leader is a strong contender for the mayor’s post while other new members elected Monday in the MCC polls including Puttaningamma of Ward 54, Bhuvaneshwari of Ward 60 , Shobha of Ward 61 and Hajira Seema from Ward 34 are also in the race for mayorship.
