The District In-charge Minister was speaking after inaugurating the Dalit Vachanakara Jayanti
“Dalit vachanakaras of the 12th century tried to wipe out social evils and fought against the caste system,” said Revenue and District In-charge Minister V Srinivas Prasad.
Inaugurating the Dalita Vachanakarara Jayanti organised by District Administration in association with Department of Kannada and Culture at Maneyangala on Thursday Srinivas Prasad said: “Dalit vachanakaras fought against social evils and tried to uphold social justice.”
He said, “Dalit Vachanakaras of the 12th century including Madara Chennaiah, Madara Dhoolaiah, Samagara Haralaiah, Dohara Kakkaiah and Urilingi Peddi played a vital role in eradicating the caste system. The contribution of vachanakaras in the 12 century for a humane social order and in spearheading the Vachana movement is immense. Basavanna and other vachanakara worked hard towards a casteless society and struggled to build a healthy society. The Anubhava Mantapa thus provided a great platform for the downtrodden and the oppressed to articulate their woes and envision a better and a just society.”
“It is saddening to know that in the name of Basavanna and other vachanakaras people are trying to glorify a particular religion and caste. A group of Veershaiva community people claim ‘Veerashaiva’ as dharma and a few others claim it as caste,” he added.
Later Srinivas Prasad said that programmes such as this would help create awareness among the people to build a society based on the principles of equality and justice, he added.
Registrar (Examination) of Karnataka State Gangubai Hangal University of Music and Performing Arts Dr M S Shekhar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Venkatesh, Tahsildhar Naveen Joseph and others were present.
