It is in the news once again that central government wants to increase the penalties for all sorts of traffic violations with an aim to reduce the number of road accidents and to bring some discipline in vehicle users. Every year several lakhs of road accidents, with an average of 1.5 lakh fatalities and more people than this number getting injured, are being reported. To this effect recently central cabinet approved the hike in the fines. This step may bring down the numbers to certain extent. However, besides fines, improvement in road condition is necessary. Even after 70 years of independence, we do not have good roads at all places. Many roads and bridges need proper maintenance. Many roads have unscientific and innumerable (some unauthorized), road humps without any caution to road users. Allowing animals to roam freely on roads is adding to the woes of the road users. Proper engineering aspects are forgotten while forming some roads, leading to accidents. Governments should also focus on these aspects simultaneously to bring the number further down.
