“The Nayaka community stands in fourth place in Karnataka with more than 69 lakh population. The community, despite coming under ST category, lacks representation in politics, education and is also financially backward. There is an urgent need for the upliftment of the community,” said Karnataka State Nayaka Welfare Committee, in the city on Wednesday.
The committee members staged a protest in front of the DC’s office, demanding benefits for the community. The protesters said that, 7.7 per cent reservation should be kept aside for the ST category. “Vacant posts in government sector should be filled immediately. Special hostels for students of ST community should be constructed at the earliest,” they demanded.
President of Karnataka State Nayaka Welfare Committee, Dhyavappa Nayak, district president Shridar Chamundibetta, Prabhakar Hunsur, Jawarappa Ramanahalli, Suresh Kumarabeedu and others were present.
