Need to empower women lawyers: Pramila Nesargi

President of Indian Federation of Women Lawyers Suman Hegde noted that the women lawyers had the responsibility to empower women of other sections of the society.

She was speaking at the valedictory programme of Karnataka State Women Lawyers Conference organised by Indian Federation of Women Lawyers, Karnataka Chapter and Mysore Women Lawyers Forum at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall.

Addressing the gathering she said that women in general have debunked the myth that women cannot compete and shoulder responsibilities on par with men. There is no field today where the women have not made in roads and proved their mettle. Thus, there is a greater need to provide equal justice to the women, she added.

Earlier, during the deliberations former MLA and advocate Pramila Nesargi urged that women advocates need to be empowered in their profession and accorded equal status. There are many women who despite being eligible for the post of judges have been denied the opportunity. List for the post of judges should be returned if it does not feature a woman aspirant, she noted.

Further she condemned the state government for rejecting the application of women lawyers seeking travel allowance to attend the conference. Despite that women lawyers have overcome the inconvenience and constraints and have actively participated in the conferences. This shows that women lawyers have acted responsible while the state government has not, she added.

President of BAR Council Chandramouli, IFWL office-bearers and Executive Committee members were present.
