Netas apathy sombre Devraj Urs birthday celebration in Mysuru

Call it sheer apathy or lax attitude of the elected representatives and the Mysuru District administration, the event organised to mark the 101st birth anniversary of the Backward Classes messiah and former CM D Devaraj Urs left uninaugurated even hours after its scheduled time.

The programme, jointly organised by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Backward Classes Welfare Department (BCWD) here on Saturday, was scheduled to commence at 10:30 am but saw neither political leaders coming nor the district administration officials. Only a few officials from BCWD, Mysuru, stood at the entrance waiting for the political leaders to arrive.

Though the auditorium was filled to the brim with audience occupying chairs from 10 am itself, the stage wore a deserted look with empty chairs and a portrait of Devraj Urs at the corner till 12:45 pm.

MLAs Vasu and Somashekar who had arrived at Kalamandira at 10:30 am, returned when they found no sign of commencement of the programme. “I had come on time as I was to preside over the function. What should I do if there is no one at the event,” MLA Vasu justified when asked about the delay in starting of the programme owing to absence of political leaders.

“These leaders never tired of praising Devraj Urs while appeasing minorities and backward classes in their speeches. And today, on his birth anniversary, the way they have disrespected Urs by showing lack of interest shows their real colour,” one of the participants said.

When media persons inquired about the delay, they were told that PWD and District In-charge Minister H C Mahadevappa who was to inaugurate the event stayed back in Bengaluru due to some official work and had asked Minister for Minority Welfare Tanveer Sait to inaugurate the event. But, Sait arrived at the event place only at 12:45 to inaugurate it as he was busy in a private function.

“It’s all about priority. Wouldn’t it be ungrateful to ignore such a great personality who worked for the betterment of minorities and backward classes? Being a minority welfare minister, at least he should have shown some courtesy to attend the on time,” another participant said.

The event later was inaugurated by Tanveer Sait. MLA Somashekhar was present.
