NIE students present ‘Smart Cradle’ to Bapuji home

A novel ‘Smart Cradle’ developed by the students of ‘Industrial Automation & Robotics’ at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of  National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru, was donated to the Bapuji Children’s Home, Gokulam, on Saturday.

This Smart Cradle is designed, fabricated and tested a unique alarm system to help save infants left abandoned near orphanages. One of the common inhuman sights we still see is people abandoning ‘unwanted’ babies near orphanages. Unless the baby is rescued in a short period of time, it may face fatal health complications. With the noble thought of rescuing the abandoned babies, the students took up the challenge and designed an automatic system, which will be  effective in rescuing abandoned babies.

When a new born baby is placed on the cradle, the system senses the presence of the baby and sends alarms through wireless technology. Meanwhile an SMS reaches the authorities to take immediate action. This indigenously designed product can be placed in front of government hospitals and privately run orphanages to help save infants from any kinds of probable harm from the animals or the atmosphere.

The completely automated system has a smart baby bed designed to detect the presence of baby on it. It has a spring supported moving platform, which goes down when a baby is placed and comes up when the baby is taken back. Below the platform is a switch system and battery powered electronics hardware. The electronics hardware is housed inside an ingress protected box making it weather proof.

The alarming system placed in the orphanage office which can be at the distance of around 50-60 meters from the cradle gets an alarm through wireless technology. The system alarms until necessary action is taken. An SMS module is placed which sends an SMS to the concerned authorities within few minutes. There is always a risk of even stray dogs eating away the baby. Hence to protect the infant from environment and harmful creatures, this smart baby bed is designed and deployed accordingly.

This system was developed by M.Tech students Ajit N.N, Rakesh K.M and Keshava Prakash V under the supervision of K.S.Lakshmikanth and Dr. K. R. Prakash, faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Management, Principal and staff of NIE have complimented the noble initiative taken by the students and faculty.
