The Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIE Institute of Technology (NIEIT) had recently organised a technical talk on ‘Renewable energy resources and combustion technologies’ by Prof S Shamsundar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIE, Mysuru
Briefing the students about the various activities of NIE-CREST, Prof Shamsundar elaborated the importance of utilisation of renewable energy and the application of sustainable technologies to meet the energy needs of the day. He further explained in detail the production of biodiesel from non-edible seeds like honge, mahua, neem, etc.
He demonstrated the practical models and prototypes of the parabolic solar cooker, solar home light and solar drier which are power saving and adoptable to seasonal changes and also explained about the designing process and implementation of Rain Water Harvesting systems (RWH) in domestic and commercial buildings.
The students, who participated in the programme, came forward to take up projects related to these technologies in the coming academic year to bring about innovative changes in the existing system.
S K Lakshminarayana, secretary – NIE group of institutions, presided. Dr. Vidyaraj C, Principal, NIEIT; Dr T Jayaraju, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering and programme co-ordinator M D Ravishankar, assistant prof, Department of Mechanical Engineering, were present.
Meanwhile, a workshop on ‘Construction and demonstration of astra ole’ has been organised on April 6 at 4 pm. Astra has been looking at the rural cooking issues and trying to identify solutions to improve the efficiency of cooking stoves by improved combustion technology, to use biogas for cooking, etc.
