Organic farming needs importance: Dr G Janardhan

Mysuru, June 18:- “Health of every citizen is in the hands of farmers. They have to follow organic farming,” said the Dean of Yalachanahalli Agricultural College, Dr G Janardhan.

He was speaking after inaugurating the organic Mango Fair and organic Farming workshop at Agriculture Marketing Study Centre on Hunsur Road in the city, organised by Akashavani Mysuru, Union of organic farmers of Mandya, Chamarajanagar Districts, Regional Organic Unions of Kolar and Chikkaballapur on Monday.

“We think twice before drinking a drop of water. We check whether the bottle is sealed or not. For us, health is very important. We were depending on foreign countries for food after independence. After the green revolution, we are exporting food to other countries. But the use of chemical fertilisers is poisoning our food. Our life expectancy has come down from 100 to 75 years. The next generations may not last longer than 45-55 years. Our health is in the hands of farmers. If they give importance to organic farming, it would be good. Today, we don’t have the patience to wait till the fruits ripen. We use chemicals to ripen the fruits. We should avoid eating such fruits,” he suggested.

Reddappa K V, assistant director of Akashavani Mysuru H Srinivas, principal of organic farming study centre Dr Rathnamma and others were present. (MR/GK).
