Our ultimate goal should be to keep the city clean: Javagal Srinath

Former international cricketer Javagal Srinath, who has been roped in as the Mysuru City Corporation’s Swachh Bharat Mission Ambassador spoke to CityToday correspondent N Suresh.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q.You have been roped in as ambassador for MCC’s Swachh Bharat Mission, How do you feel?

Being an ambassador is a great position, I always had a concern to keep the city and my surroundings clean. As an ambassador to this initiative, I wish to bring more awareness among the public.

Q. What  was the feeling when MCC officials requested you to be the ambassador for this mission?

I was first approached by Mayor M J Ravi Kumar and MCC Commissioner Jagadeesh to be the ambassador to this initiative. My thinking was also on the same lines. So I decided to join hands with the MCC to make the city cleaner.

Q. You have been recognised as an ‘International cricketer’ and a proud ‘Mysurean’. You have reached your goals in sports. How would you contribute to the growth and cleanliness of the city?

Cricket has its own charisma and only when people watch the game and support, a player gets name. I would use my fame to keep Mysuru clean. I will support MCC in their initiative and extend my support towards it.

Q. How will you create awareness on cleanliness?

Cleanliness is a collective responsibility and every citizen in the city has the responsibility of keeping the city clean. There is a need for right effort in this direction. Segregation of garbage plays a
pivotal role and people must be sensitised on this topic.

Q. Mysuru has slipped to 5th position in Swachh Survekshan. Is it not bad?

Being ranked number 1 or 2 or 10 is not the matter. The ultimate goal of every individual should be to keep the city clean. Mysuru has bagged the cleanest city tag two times, our effort and the rank must be a motivational factor. The aim of keeping the city clean is not to bag awards or rank. Cleanliness must become our lifestyle.

Q.Any other celebrity or your friends who will join cleanliness mission?

I will look into this. I will try to bring a few and make them part of  this novel initiative. I will not disclose the names but will bring in someone who can make this a successful programme.
