Sri Lankan theatre director and noted thinker Parakrama Niriella will inaugurate the annual theatre festival of city’s own repertory Rangayana ‘Bahuroopi’ scheduled from January 13 to 18.
After the sudden demise of noted actor and theatre personality Om Puri, who had earlier accepted the invitation to inaugurate the ‘Bahuroopi-2017’, the Rangayana and Bahuroopi theatre festival committee took the decision to get Niriella to inaugurate the six-day International theatre festival Bahuroopi.
Addressing a press meet here in the city on Monday, Director of Kannada and Culture Department, K A Dayanand said, “With the sudden death of Om Puri, the committee held a meeting to finalise the guest to Inaugurate the theatre festival and the meeting decided to rope in Niriella, a noted theatre director of Sri Lanka.
As part of the festival, four international teams from Sri Lanka, Poland, Bangladesh and London will stage plays titled ‘Sekkuva’, ‘Bad City’, ‘Ameena Sundari’ respectively for the first time in the city. Similarly, Indian based teams including Bhojpuri, Kashmiri, Hindi, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Bengali, Odiya artists will present noted plays during the festival.
Rangayana this year has decided to stage plays in four different venues that includes Kalamandir, Vanaranga, Bhoomigeetha and newly constructed Kiru Rangamandira.
Deputy Director of Rangayana Nirmala Matapathi, actor and theatre personality Mandya Ramesh, convenor of Bahuroopi Ramanath and others were present.
