Police crack temple theft case, two held

Bylakuppe police arrested two persons on charges of theft and recovered an idol belonging to the 14th century.

The police have arrested Madhu, a resident of Bhookanakere of Krishnaraja Pet taluk, Sharath, a resident of KR Pet town in Mandya district.

According to police officials, the suspects were trying to sell the 14th century idol of Goddess Lakshmi. The 1.5 ft tall idol is made of panchaloha and weighs around 18.3 kg.

The idol was stolen a year ago from Nambinarayana temple at Kerethonnur village in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district. According to priest Srinivas of the temple, the idol was installed by saint Ramanujacharya and similar idols were installed at Melkote Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple, Keertinarayana temple in Talakad, Chennakeshava Temple in Belur and Veeranarayana temple in Gadag.
