Political parties should not support cultivation of tobacco: Mysoremath

Mysuru, April 8:- “Political parties are luring tobacco farmers with various schemes. It is unfortunate that leaders are encouraging farmers to grow tobacco more and more,” rued social activist and crusader against tobacco Vasanth Kumar Mysoremath here on Monday.

“Leaders are taking credit for giving such assurances and having fulfilled them later. The Election Commission of India (ECI) should take note of this. Several discussions have been held in the Parliament regarding controlling the use of tobacco. Many sitting Members of Parliament have participated in such discussions. Instead of stopping tobacco menace, they are misusing the farmers and giving speeches supporting tobacco,” he said in his press release.

“Every eight seconds, one person dies due to consumption of tobacco. Thousands of trees have been chopped to burn tobacco to prepare it. Those who smoke cigarettes are also causing health diseases to their neighbours. Farmers are committing suicide being unable to repay the debts. India has already signed FCTC agreement with the World Health Organisation. Knowing all these facts, politicians are misleading innocent farmers. Citizens should unitedly condemn this. If any candidate comes forward against the cultivation of tobacco, we should elect such candidates. Central government should identify alternate crops in place of tobacco. Farmers should be provided all the facilities for farming,” he added. (MR/SH)
