Private participation in environmental management important: ST Somashekar

Mysuru, June 1:- “Planting of saplings at layouts and parks, their maintenance should also be given to private organisations to make them involved in environmental protection,” said district in-charge minister ST Somashekar. He was speaking at a preliminary meeting ahead of the World Environment Day held at zilla panchayat auditorium last week.

“People should get jobs and districts should become greener. For that, planting of saplings under MNREGA scheme will be the right decision. But it should not happen just on paper,” he said.

“I have requested revenue minister, secretary of revenue department and forest minister to hold a meeting regarding planting saplings across Chamundi Hills. A meeting will be held to decide how to plant saplings, how to manage them for the next three years,” he said.

“Availability of plants and placement of saplings are also important. Officials have to plan them accordingly. What plants can be planted under electricity lines and how long will they grow also matter. Private nurseries are looking after saplings with affection. We have to look after them well,” said MLA SA Ramadass.

Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar said that responsibility of looking after the saplings should be handed to industries as well.

Commissioner of MCC Gurudutt Hegde, MUDA commissioner Dr Natesh, officials of horticulture department, forest department, irrigation department were present. (MR\GK).
