Remembering Gangubai Hangal and Puttaraja Gavai

Mysuru, March 5:- Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University is celebrating its decennial year. March 3 being Pandit Puttaraja Gavai birth anniversary and March 5 being Padmavibhushana Dr Gangubai Hangal’s birthday, it makes it all the more significant. These two legendary musicians were remembered through cultural programmes and competitions held at the university campus.

Samskruthika Kalaprathibhotsava inter-university and college-level competitions started off with an artistic rally by students of KSGHMPAU and other colleges showcasing Dollu, Tamate, Nagari, Pooja Kunitha and many other folk forms of Karnataka.

Vice-Chancellor of KSOU Prof S Vidyashankar inaugurated the festival.

Pt Praveen Godkhindi, actor Mandya Ramesh, well-known danseuse Dr Vasundhara Doraswamy, Prof Rajesh (RE) and Lokesh graced the occasion as guests. Vice-Chancellor Prof Nagesh V Bettakote, the visionary behind this programme presided over the event.

Various competitions like Bharatanatyam, Hindustani and Carnatic vocal, instruments solo percussion and non-percussion competitions of harmonium, tabla, and mrudangam, light music, mono-acting and mimicry were held successfully.

Around 100 students from Bengaluru, Dharwad, Mysuru, Udupi and other universities participated enthusiastically.

Classical dance, folk song and dance, skit and patriotic song competitions were held to mark the final day.

Veteran music composer Dr Hamsalekha and theatre person B Suresh were the guests for the valedictory. Dr Bhuvana, cultural coordinator and lecturer, Department of Bharatanatyam, KSGH Music and Performing Arts University was present. (MR)
