Rev Fr K A William was ordained as the seventh Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mysuru during the Episcopal Ordination and Installation ceremony held at St Joseph’s Cathedral (St Philomena’s Church) campus in the city on Monday.
Bishop Emeritus Rev Dr Thomas Antony Vazhapilly, consecrated Rev William as the new bishop by washing his head with Holy oil, placed the Holy Bible on his head, offered him the Bishop’s ring and Mitre, a ceremonial headgear and Crozier, before taking the Bishop’s seat, in the presence of Bellary Bishop Henry D’Souza, Bengaluru Archbishop Bernard Moras, Chikmagalur Bishop T Anthony Swamy and several other priests.
Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa, MP R Dhruvanarayan, former legislative Assembly speaker K G Bopaiah, MLAs Vasu, S R Mahesh, Mayor M J Ravi Kumar, former mayor Ayub Khan and other dignitaries were present.
Thousands of devotees had gathered to witness the consecration ceremony of Rev William as the new Bishop. He was greeted by the devotees.
Rev William was appointed as the Bishop of Mysuru Diocese by Pope Francis on January 25, 2017, and he succeeds Rev Vazhapilly who held the post for 14 years.
Rev Williiam belongs to Polibetta in Kodagu district and completed his education in Mysuru before joining the seminary to take up theological studies. He also has a Master’s degree in Canon Law and Christianity.
He will also be responsible for more than 130 educational institutions in the Diocese of Mysuru.
