Bhima- the 49 year old African White rhinoceros at Musuru Zoo died on Wednesday morning at 4 am due to health complications.
Bhima was a celebrated African Rhino at the zoo as he was the only rhino from abroad and spent 45 years of his life at Sri Jayachamarajendra Zoological Gardens. He came to zoo in 1971 from a national park in Hannover, Germany.
Zoo Executive Director Venkatesan said: “We deeply regret the death of Bhima. He was dull, inactive and reluctant to walk from past two days. Though necessary treatments were carried out, Bheema did not respond to them and succumbed to death. The average lifespan of rhinos in captivity is about 40 to 50 years and Bhima lived his age.”
With the death of Bhima, the zoo is left with a pair of one horned Indian rhinos. Two years ago, the zoo got a pair of Indian Rhinos from Patna under an animal exchange programme. As a female rhino died four years ago, now the zoo is deprived of African rhinos. After a gap of over a decade the zoo has displayed one-horned rhinos, which live up to 40 years in captivity.
