Riders without helmets, insurance beware! Police to seize vehicles

Helmetless and pillion riders beware! The police will no longer let you off after penalising you for your offence. The vehicles of errant riders will be seized and released only after the offenders start wearing helmets.

A statement issued by the police on Sunday said that widespread violation of the helmet rule by two-wheeler riders and pillion riders, has been noticed across the city. Hence, the police have decided to not only penalise people for the offence, but also seize vehicle till the riders and pillion riders bring in and wear the helmets. Similarly, the police will also seize vehicles plying in the city without valid insurance, which is mandatory under the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The police will not only penalise the vehicle driver for driving without a valid insurance, but release the vehicle only after the offender renews the insurance and produces documents for the same.

Meanwhile, the police will also crack down on motorists talking on the phone while driving. Referring to a direction by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the statement issued by the police stated that the driving licence of the errant motor vehicle drivers would be suspended if they are found talking the on phone while driving.

Other traffic offences for which driving licences will be suspended include drunk driving, jumping traffic signals and carrying more than the stipulated baggage and passengers in vehicles.
