The 54th Foundation Day of RIEM (Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru) was celebrated on Monday at the Assembly Hall of the institute.
Prof S N Hegde, former Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore, who was the chief guest, delivered Sarda Panikker memorial lecture on “How to turn around school education for effective learning and training?”
In his lecture, Prof Hegde reiterated that the basic philosophy of education is to bring in cultural, social and intellectual transformation of man – the species-homo sapiens – into a human being. This metamorphosis is expected to usher in universal brotherhood, good citizenry, spirit of caring and sharing harmonious community life devoid of communal ill feeling, fanaticism and parochialism.
He further emphasised the importance of ethics, character, discipline, hard work, right values to become part of education system at all levels. “Good teaching must ensure a joyful learning among students.”
Prof Hegde observed that the country needs dedicated teachers who can act as true learning facilitators.
He also stressed the need for redesigning curriculum at all stages of school education including teacher education to make it more practical.
