Compared to six medal tally in 2012 Olympics, two medals in Rio Olympics this year is most significant in more ways than one. It is the performance of the girls that has brought prestige for both P V Sindhu who got a silver in badminton, who Sakshi Malik got bronze in wrestling and Dipa Karmakar who missed the bronze in gymnastics proved to be role models to others in their own way. While Sindhu’s triumph is a lesson that there is no short cut to success except through hard work, discipline and tenacity. It also stressed the importance of the single minded commitment of her trainer and mentor Gopichand. Sakshi Malik broke the stereotype impression that wrestling is not the monopoly of boys while Dipa Karmakar by attempting the death defying Produnova vault successfully missed the bronze by a whisker. All the three girls have now proved inspiration to the next generation of athletes. Therefore, they richly deserved the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. Hope the success of these three girls and other who came near winning medals and honoured with awards will now send an unmistakable message all round to invest to revamp the system and facilities for athletics and other sports so that we can win more medals in the next Olympics in 2020.
