RTE: DDPI asked to file cases against erring private schools

At a meeting with Zilla Panchayat CEO P A Gopal, parents air their woes

Zilla Panchayat CEO P A Go-pal directed DDPI H R Basappa to file a criminal case against private education institutions which are found guilty of violating RTE rules and regulations. At a meeting convened at Chamundi Vihar Stadium on Thursday, the ZP CEO received complaints on issues such as fee structure, RTE admissions in various aided and unaided schools. Some of the parents alleged that the private schools were collecting a hefty fee. Though concerned authorities were aware of the situation, they were not initiating any action, they alleged. Nagasimha, a social activist alleged that private institutions were taking extra money from parents for books, bag, shoes and socks which are double the market price.

“If they fail to follow the same, concerned parents are warned that their wards would be chucked from the school. With no other option, parents cough up what the schools demand. The fee structure is also unscientific. Schools which were charging Rs 20,000 last year are now charging As 50,000,” he added. “The authorities are aware of this issue but they are supporting private institutions.

” Venugopal, a social activist, said that if the education department failed to take action, “we will file a PIL against erring institutions.” Gopal asked Basappa to file criminal cases against private institutions who violated the norms. The DDPI was also asked to take action against BEOs for inaction.
