Sale of essential commodities at a higher price won’t be tolerated: Minister ST Somashekar

Mysuru, April 16:- “We have received several complaints against APMC and HOPCOMS purchasing vegetables and fruits from farmers at a lower price and selling them at a much higher price. It will not be tolerated,” said District in-charge Minister S T Somashekar.

He was speaking at a meeting of APMC president, traders and merchants at Zilla Panchayat Hall here on Wednesday amid the nationwide lockdown to contain spread of coronavirus pandemic. The minister instructed officials to take action against merchants who are selling groceries and vegetables at a higher price.

“Emphasis should be given to cleanliness at all APMC markets of the state. Social distancing should be maintained. Basic facilities should be provided to farmers and merchants at APMC,” he said.

“No one in Karnataka should remain hungry. For that, we are distributing ration for two months to all ration cardholders in advance. There are complaints against some people selling their quota of ration in the black market. A thorough investigation has to be made regarding this and action should be taken,” he added.

“Public representatives and people of HD Kote demanded stoppage of movement of goods carriers between Karnataka and Kerala through Bavali check-post in HD Kote. If we ban the transportation, it will affect the supply of essential commodities and APMC,” the minister said.

“Shops of HOPCOMS have been selling fruits and vegetables at a higher price. To stop this, farmers should be allowed to sell their crops to the public directly. HOPCOMS shops should purchase vegetables and fruits at APMC,” said MLA SA Ramadass.

“Every day, more than 8,000 farmers and merchants come to APMC yard. Basic facilities should be provided at APMC yard premises. Temporary toilets should be installed immediately,” said Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar.
