Shivakumar urges Simha to take up the issue with Centre

Condemning the judicial activism backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi- led NDA government, senior journalist K Shivakumar, who is also a member of Karnataka Media Academy, on Friday urged the elected leaders to take steps to review Supreme Court order which said that defamation amounts to criminal case in response to petitions filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and other.

He opined that the Apex Court order was a serious threat to freedom of speech as well functioning of democracy in the country in accordance with the constitution. “The direction is a threat to fundamental right of every individual. The court panel directions may become a strong tool for the central government to strangulate the voice of people and press. In many cases, politicians and journalists would be targeted. Some politicians may get away from the issue, but what about journalists? he asked.

Shivakumar has appealed to BJP MP Pratap Simha to raise this issue in the Parliament to bring positive changes to strengthen democratic values in the largest democratic country in the world. In response Simha assured the gathering that he would take up the issue Union law minister Sadananda Gowda.
