Road widening works launched near Jaladarshini despite protest

Mysuru, November 6:- District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa, Lok Sabha member Pratap Simha and MLA Vasu performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the ‘controversial’ road widening works near Jaladarshani Guest House on Mysuru-Hunsur Road on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Pratap Simha said that only four trees will be cut for the road widening and this will benefit the citizens who commute on their vehicles. There should be no opposition when the road widening will help save human lives, he added.

A team from the Centre identified the area around Jaladarshini as a danger zone for vehicular traffic and hence, the work has been taken up, Simha said.

The situation was tense during the guddali puja ceremony as members of Mysuru Grahakara Parishat (MGP) staged a silent protest, opposing the widening of Mysuru–Hunsur Road. However, the police intervened to bring the situation under control.

“The project will be a blunder. It will also affect the environment and the heritage. According to the MUDA Master Plan, the area between Field Marshal K M Cariappa Circle (Metropole Circle) and Valmiki Road comes under the heritage area. Widening the road will cause over speeding and lead to accidents,”said Major General (retired) Sudhir G Vombatkere.

Meanwhile, the protesters submitted a memorandum to Mysuru- Kodagu Lok Sabha member Simha opposing the road widening works. Hundreds of protesters took part in the silent protest.
