The state government has selected renowned poet Chennaveera Kanavi to inaugurate Mysuru Dasara 2016 which will begin on October 1.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah spoke to Kanavi over phone and formally requested him to inaugurate Dasara, and he obliged the request.
Chennaveera Kanavi, hailing from Hombalu village of Gadag district, was born on 28 June, 1928. He has worked as director of ‘Prasaranga’ of Karnataka University from 1956 to 1983.
Chennaveera Kanavi is one of the leading writers in the Kannada language and has received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his work Jeeva Dhwani (poetry) in 1981. He is popularly known as “Samanvayada Kavi” and “Soujanyada Kavi”. In 2011, he was honoured with the Sahitya Kala Kaustubha Award.
It can be recalled that, previously, the government had shortlisted 6 names for Dasara inauguration which included the names of novelist S L Bhyrappa, poet Nissar Ahmed, freedom fighter H S Doreswamy, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Suttur seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami.
