The State Cabinet Sub Committee for Drought Study Committee headed by Law Minister T B Jayachandra conducted a review meeting with district administration officials and took them to task.
The minister directed them to speed up work in the drought hit areas in the district. The committee directed the officials to accord main priority to drinking water in both the rural and urban areas. While many areas in the district have been hit by drought, it is the responsibility of the district administration to form a task force and speed up the work.
Replying to the committee District Commissioner C Shikha said that the administration had already formed a task force to provide alternative occupation through MGNREGA, water supply, midday meal in government schools in five taluks that have been marked as drought hit areas. Besides, fodder and other essential facilities have been provided to drought-hit areas.
MLA G T Devegowda demanded the committee to release fund for separate schemes with the stress on drinking water, instead of considering the drinking water issues in drought compensation.
He expressed displeasure against the government for not focusing on rejuvenation of the lakes which was why the state was reeling under severe drought pushing the farmers to commit suicide.
After the meeting, the committee conducted tour in Muttikyathanahalli, Bogadi, HD Kote, Hunsur, Periapatna for spot visit to drought hit area for understanding the ground water rejuvenation works conducted by district administration and glancing the conditions of lakes.
Cooperative Minister H S Mahadeva Prasad, Food and Civil Supply Minister Dinesh Gundurao, MLA Chikkamadu, MLA Manjunath, MLA Vasu, PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa, Regional Commissioner Kunjappa, CM’s Joint Secretary Ramaiah, MCC Commissioner Dr C G Betsurmath, Zilla Panchayat CEO P A Gopal, and other senior officials took part in it.
