Mysuru, July 6:- “Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram, who was a freedom fighter, social worker and Dalit leader is a role model for all of us. He was a great leader who led the movement against untouchability. It is our responsibility to remember the path he walked,” said the District in-charge Minister S T Somashekar in his media release.
“Though Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram was born in a rich family, he had to face humiliation for being born in a Dalit community. He experienced the pain of untouchability as a child which later led him to fight against the evil practice,” he said.
“He actively participated in pro-Dalit movements during his college days. He led a mazdoor rally of 50,000 people at Wellington Square in Kolkata. He made Bihar as his workplace. He participated in the movement led by Mahatma Gandhi for the eradication of untouchability. Later he joined politics,” he said.
The minister called upon public representatives to follow the ideologies of Babu Jagjivan Ram. (MR/GK)
