State farmer unions to support all-India bandh on September 27

Farmers threaten to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru if FRP on sugarcane is not revised

Prime News, National, Karnataka, Farmers, Finance, Power Supply, Mysuru, September 11:- Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called for an all-India bandh on September 27 to protest against the Centre’s farm laws. There is also a demand for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all the crops. The protest is also against the privatisation of electricity boards and the move to stop the free supply of power to farmers.

Around 500 farmers’ unions, under the SKM banner, will observe the nationwide bandh to draw the Centre’s attention.

We request the Karnataka-based farmers unions to lend overwhelming support to make the bandh successful, said SKM leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar here on Saturday (September 11).

Talking to reporters at a press conference held at Jaladarshini Guest House here, he said, “In the last two years, the Centre had not bothered to touch the Fair and Remunerative Price for sugarcane. Now, it has increased by Rs 5. Union Minister of State (MoS) for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje should know the increase in FRP is a pittance. If it is not revised by this month-end, we will be forced to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru.”

He said, “In protest against the farm laws and increase in oil prices, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) body Bharatiya Kisan Mandali staged a demonstration on September 8. If the central leaders are not aware of the problems, they should hold talks with farmer leaders.”

Shanthakumar said, “As if this is not enough, banks are harassing farmers to sanction loans. As per the norm, farmers need not pledge their property for a loan of Rs 2 lakh. The concerned banks have called for a meeting on September 24 to discuss the problem. If nothing comes through, we will have to look at other options.”

SKM’s state organising secretary Attahalli Devaraj, district secretary Hallikere Hundi Bhagyaraj, general secretary Kiragasuru Shankar,  Baradanapura Nagaraj and Devendra Kumar were present. (MR/GK)
