State government will collapse on its own: R Ashoka

Coalition govt is needed only for HD Kumaraswamy and DK Shivakumar, says Ashoka

Mysuru, July 1:- Ever since the coalition government in the state came into existence last year, political pundits have been wondering how long it would last. If there are questions marks over its survival, it is not without a reason.

Having been pushed to the second spot following the state Assembly elections last year, Congress had no option than to extend unconditional support to Janata Dal (Secular) to head the government though with pre-conditions and seat adjustments. Many senior Congress leaders were not in favour of a coalition government. But given Congress’ political standing in the country, they had to bow to high command’s diktat.

Out of power in most of the states, Congress’ only hope was Karnataka. Allowing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to wrest power in the state, Congress knew it could spell deep trouble in the years to come. Given this scenario, it allowed H D Kumaraswamy to head the government amidst much resistance from within.

BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa went all out to seize the opportunity but the infamous ‘Operation Kamal’ did not materialise then. Though BJP has been accused of trying to poach MLAs from both Congress and JD(S), nothing concrete has emerged. There were also talks that the coalition government may collapse after the Lok Sabha elections. But the BJP high command asked Yeddyurappa not to do anything in haste which could have a cascading effect on the party’s prospects in the state.

The latest developments in the state political scenario suggest Congress-JD(S) government is in troubled waters. In fact, a couple of weeks back, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda had opined coalition government may not last long and that mid-term polls are imminent. That Gowda went back on his comments is a different story.

“The state government will collapse for sure but BJP will have no role in it. The resignation season of MLAs will begin with that of Anand Singh,” said former deputy chief minister and BJP leader DCM R Ashoka. He was speaking to media persons in the city on Monday.

“He is not alone. He has some MLAs with him. H D Kumaraswamy who became the chief minister by sheer luck will run out of lady luck shortly. This government is needed for Kumaraswamy and DK Shivakumar. No one, including former chief minister Siddaramaiah, wants this government. Kumaraswamy once said he had become an orphan after taking charge as chief minister. Wait for some more days. They will only fight and come out of the coalition. There will be no role of BJP in it,” he added.
