Mysuru, August 21:- President of State Sugarcane Growers’ Association Kuruburu Shanthakumar has said that the Members of Parliament from Karnataka should take a team to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urge him to announce the floods in Karnataka as a ‘national disaster.’
He was speaking at a press meet held at Jaladarshini Guest House in the city on Tuesday.
“100 taluks of 21 districts of Karnataka are affected by floods. More than Rs 50,000 crore worth assets have been ravaged. Though the central finance minister and the home minister did an aerial survey of the situation, they have not announced any compensation. The MPs from the state should wake up at least now and request the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce the flood as a ‘national disaster’ and release funds of Rs 20,000 crore,” he said.
“Our office-bearers visited flood-affected areas and have prepared a report. It will be submitted to the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa,” he added.
“Flood-hit people are having a difficult time. Their agricultural loans should be waived off and banks should be instructed to give them new loans. Only the residents of rehabilitation centres started by the government are getting the government facilities. 50% of the flood-affected people are living with their relatives. They are not getting any compensation. Government should take action on this as well,” Shanthkumar said.
State secretary Attahalli Devaraj, district secretary Kiragsuru Shankar, secretary Kerehundi Bhagyaraj and others were present. (MR/KS)
