Superstitious beliefs still persist in our society: MLA MK Somashekar

Mysuru, January 19:- “Unfortunately superstitious beliefs still persist in our society even in the 21st century,” said MLA M K Somashekar.

He was speaking after inaugurating Vemana Jayanti programme at Kiru Rangamandira at Kalamandir premises here by paying floral tributes to the image of Vemana on Friday.

“Many scholars have tried to develop the society. State government is observing the birthdays of such contributors. Vemana tried to introduce a revolution through his literature. He changed his lifestyle because of his sister-in-law, Hemareddy Mallamma and promoted revolutionary thoughts and ideas to the society. Unfortunately we are hanging on to the superstitious beliefs even today,” the MLA said.

Writer Usha Narasimhan appreciated state government’s move to observe Vemana Jayanti. She explained that the works of Vemana which came to limelight in the mid 20th century has been translated in various languages.

Additional DC T Yogesh, Tayuru Vittalamurthy, Vishwanath, deputy director of Kannada and Culture Department H Chennappa and others were present.
