Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh detained in Kolkata during counter-khela hobe protest

Prime News, National (Kolkata), August 17:- On a day when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) celebrated Khela Hobe Diwas on Monday, BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, Joy Prakash Majumdar and MP Debashree Chowdhury were detained by West Bengal police for protesting at the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road in Kolkata.

The BJP leaders along with their supporters were protesting the communal violence that erupted following the “Direct Action” call given by the Muslim League in 1946. The Muslim League had chosen August 16 as the Direct Action Day to press for its demand for a separate country for Muslims in post-British rule in India.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s TMC recently decided to mark August 16 as the Khela Hobe Day apparently to celebrate its victory over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the assembly election held during March-April this year.

However, the TMC said the aim of its Khela Hobe Diwas was to promote sports to pay tribute to 16 football fans who died in a stampede on August 16, 1980.

Politically, the TMC wanted to take its pre-poll winning slogan of khela hobe forward to strengthen its presence not just in West Bengal but to make inroads in other states too. (MR, Inputs: Agencies).
