A number of deadlines for the completion of the state-of-the-art swimming pool at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium have passed. Result, the swimming pool of the International standards is limping and is yet to be completed even after more than three years since its construction began.
Though the construction of the pool started in August 2013, the same ran into troubles owing a land dispute over the spot identified for the purpose and delay in the sanction of the funds. The delay in the completion of the pool has disappointed the swimming enthusiasts who were eagerly waiting for the completion since a long time. The main pool measuring 50m X 25m was expected to be completed in August 2015 itself.
As the construction of the pool is moving in a snail’s pace, swimming enthusiasts who cannot afford to go to pools in hotels had to rely on university pool at Saraswathipuram. If the Chamundi Vihar pool is ready for use, it will serve the needs of the students in the Sports Hostel and also residents of the areas in the eastern part of the city.
However, the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports has said that the construction of the pool would be completed by the end of December or in the first week of January. The estimated for the project was Rs 3.25 crore but later it was revised to Rs 3.62 crore. The cost was finally revised to Rs 4.97 crore for additional facilities including parking and drainage facilities.
According to the officials, the works related to gate, parking area, asphalting of roads and rain water harvesting works are pending while the rest of the works are almost completed. Once the pool is functional, various swimming competition including state level Dasara swimming competition will be conducted in this pool. Apart from competition, swimming camp will also be conducted at the pool.
An electronic touch pad, necessary for holding national-level competitions, will also be installed at the swimming pool. A diving pool with a depth of 12m will come up in the second phase.
The swimming pool will be thrown open to the general public as well.
