Mysuru, October 22:- Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, GSSS Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women, Mysuru, organised a talk on “Effective communication skills” for the 3rd semester ECE students under the forum of AECES (Association of Electronics and Communication Engineering Students).
Dr Rajendra R Patil, professor and head, Department of ECE and Dr S Padmashree, professor, Department of ECE, GSSSIETW, Mysuru were present at the inaugural function.
The main objective of this talk was to improve the communication skills of the students thereby facilitating them to be more equipped for placement in reputed companies.
The resource person was K L Nagaraju, teacher, former principal and assistant commissioner in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan under Ministry of HRD, Government of India. He has conducted many workshops for teachers of English in India and abroad.
He created awareness among the students about the importance of being strong in spoken English in today’s circumstances. He educated them about the uniqueness of the English language as compared to other regional languages. He explained that though English has only 26 letters, it has 44 different sounds. The way special sounds are pronounced and the different varieties of English prevalent in the society was dealt upon. He encouraged them to watch ‘BBC News’ every day for a few minutes to improve their vocabulary.
He also spoke about the need for stressing some syllable in English words and their intonation making a difference in meaning. He then explained the steps to be followed for speaking better English. Later he briefed them about TOEFL and IELTS examinations and how to prepare for them. Finally, he stressed upon the need for proper communication skills for their better future.
