Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait inaugurated the newly built library at Government Higher Primary School in Chamundipuram here on Sunday.
The new library is a branch of the Central City Library, earlier located in Laxmipuram was shifted to Chamundipuram. It has been built by the Department of Libraries at a cost of rupees 6.4 lakh.
The library, with a membership of 418 people, not only has a total of 57,762 books, but also receives 28 daily newspapers and 59 periodicals and will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm every day except Mondays, second Tuesdays of every month and public holidays.
Speaking at the occasion, the minister said that there are 6,657 public libraries in the state which are public friendly. In order to encourage reading among public and students, state government has planned to renovate such libraries. Books which are needy for the students will also be provided.
Further, he said that the children of Mahouts and Kavadis who will undergo learning at tent school will be provided with tent libraries this Dasara.
Meanwhile, Sait laid the foundation stone for a new library building in Kuvempunagar. The existing building will not only be renovated at a cost of rupees 24.3 lakh, but a new building will also come up on the available land in the premises at a cost of rupees 44.5 lakh.
