Prime News, National, Agriculture, New Delhi, February 15:- Union Textile Minister Smriti Zubin Irani today (February 15) rolled out the commercial jute seed distribution scheme. Jute Corporation of India had last year, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Seeds Corporation for commercial distribution of 1,000 Metric Tonne certified jute seeds for the year 2021-22.
Highlighting the work done by the Centre to help the jute farmers in the country, Irani said the government increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for jute by nearly 76 percent in the last 6 years. She said the MSP for jute stands at Rs 4,225 for the financial year 2020-21 compared to Rs 2,400 in the year 2014-15. The textile minister asserted that the highly productive variant of jute seeds will help enhance the income of nearly 5 lakh jute farmers in the country.
Irani said both the Agriculture Ministry and the Textile Ministry is working with enhanced synergy to extend support to the jute growing farmers. She informed the Centre’s decision regarding mandatory packaging in jute materials will benefit over 4 lakh farmers directly including nearly 40 lakh agri-based households.
The minister also informed that inclusion of excavation for jute-retting tanks under MGNREGA will help create 46 lakh mandays of work under the central scheme. (Inputs: agencies, NGB)
